US Senate Republicans block emergency spending bill to aid Ukraine NHK

US Senate Republicans have blocked the advance of an emergency spending bill that includes fresh security aid for Ukraine amid partisan wrangling.

President Joe Biden's administration has asked Congress to approve an emergency spending package of over 100 billion dollars, saying US aid for Ukraine will otherwise run out by the end of the year. The package also includes security assistance for Israel.

Senators on Wednesday voted 49 in favor and 51 against advancing the bill put forward by the Democrats.

Republicans blocked the bill, demanding more funds to strengthen immigration control measures at the US border with Mexico.

Speaking after the Senate vote, US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he hopes Republicans will come up with a serious border security plan that they can work on.

The United States has provided 44.2 billion dollars in military assistance to Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

Some members of the Republican Party are opposed to additional aid for Ukraine.
