Trump's Middle East envoy meets with Netanyahu NHK

US President-elect Donald Trump's envoy to the Middle East has met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to push for a ceasefire and hostage release in the Gaza Strip.

The talks come as negotiations are underway in Qatar, a mediating country, to reach a deal to halt the fighting between Israeli forces and the Islamic group Hamas in Gaza and free the hostages held there.

The Israeli Prime Minister's Office said Netanyahu and Steve Witkoff held a meeting on Saturday.

Trump has said there will be "hell to pay" if Hamas does not release the hostages before he is inaugurated on January 20.

The office also said that Netanyahu told the head of the Mossad intelligence agency and other officials to depart for Qatar.

Local media outlets quoted sources as saying some progress has been made in the negotiations. But it remains to be seen how the talks will develop.

Health officials in Gaza say the death toll there has reached 46,537 since October 2023.
