Japan&#039;s Economic Revitalization Minister says he will continue arguing for Japan&#039;s national interests in future talks with the US on its tariff policies.
        
                    
                  
Japan&#039;s top negotiator for the talks, Akazawa Ryosei, returned to Japan on Friday afternoon after wrapping up his discussions in Washington.
        
                    
                  
Akazawa met with President Donald Trump, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other senior US officials at the White House on Wednesday. They agreed to aim for an early agreement.
        
                    
                  
The meetings were the first occasion for Akazawa to discuss US tariffs with Trump and his top administration officials.
        
                    
                  
Speaking to reporters at Tokyo&#039;s Haneda Airport, Akazawa said &quot;I made clear to the US that we feel the tariff measures are extremely regrettable. I strongly urged them to reconsider these policies.&quot;
        
                    
                  
He also pledged to continue arguing for Japan&#039;s national interests to the best of his ability in future talks.
        
                    
                  
Japan&#039;s government says it is examining the Trump administration&#039;s demands following the high-level talks.
        
                    
                  
A further round of discussions is expected before the end of this month.

Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru has stressed that the government will place priority on the tariff negotiations with the United States and do its utmost in the talks.
        
                    
                  
Japan&#039;s negotiator for the talks, Economic Revitalization Minister Akazawa Ryosei, met with President Donald Trump, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other senior US officials at the White House on Wednesday. They agreed to aim for an early agreement.
        
                    
                  
In the Upper House on Friday, an opposition party lawmaker said the US actions on tariffs have changed again and again. He said he wants to ask Ishiba about Trump&#039;s intentions, the direction of the negotiations with the US, and the need for Japan to introduce economic measures.
        
                    
                  
Ishiba responded that Trump spoke about how the US is positioned in the global economy. He said Trump explained that trade negotiations with Japan is the top priority for the US.
        
                    
                  
The prime minister added that there is a wide gap on the issue between Japan and the US, even though Akazawa had constructive talks with the US officials.
        
                    
                  
Regarding domestic measures, he said the government will study the effects of the US tariff measures and take necessary steps. But he said the government is not considering a new economic stimulus package at the moment.
        
                    
                  
Ishiba said ministerial-level negotiations will continue, and that he is thinking about visiting the US at an appropriate time to speak with Trump directly.
