An international forum on nuclear abolition has come up with proposals to be submitted to a conference on the UN treaty banning nuclear weapons.

A group of atomic bomb survivors and others staged the two-day forum at a university in Tokyo until Sunday. They invited about 90 people from Japan and abroad, including atomic bomb survivors and scholars.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The participants wrapped up the forum by releasing proposals for the UN meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which will be held in New York next month.

In order to enhance the influence of the treaty, participants stressed the need to provide assistance to people suffering damage resulting from atomic bombings and nuclear tests.

Another proposal calls for talks with nations relying on nuclear arms to convey the inhumanity of nuclear weapons and the danger of the nuclear deterrence policy.

Tanaka Terumi, a co-chair of Nihon Hidankyo, a group of survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, said the forum became a good starting point for their activities in the anniversary year.

He said he believes an increasing number of young people working together with them will be able to change the climate of opinion in society.
