Israeli airstrikes continue after purported withdrawal from Khan Younis NHK

Israel's deadly airstrikes appear to be continuing on the Gaza Strip after it announced the withdrawal of its troops from the southern city of Khan Younis.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on Sunday that the military made the withdrawal to prepare for future missions, including operations in the enclave's southernmost city of Rafah. The military said part of its forces continue to operate in Gaza.

Local media reported that at least seven residents were killed in a series of Israeli raids and shelling in some areas in the Gaza Strip through Monday.

Hamas said its delegation arrived in Cairo on Sunday to negotiate a pause in the fighting and the release of hostages. On and off talks with Israel, the US and mediating countries are believed to be under way.
Hamas and Israel remain far apart in negotiations. Hamas has called for a complete ceasefire, while Israel seeks to destroy the Islamic group. It is unclear whether both sides can reach some consensus six months after the conflict started on October 7 last year.
