US President Joe Biden and his Brazilian counterpart Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have reaffirmed their commitment to standing up for democracy. The two leaders met in Washington on Friday. Supporters of Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro attacked the Congress and other buildings in the capital Brasilia in January. The assault came about two years after supporters of former US President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol building in Washington in January 2021. Biden said that the strong democracies of the United States and Brazil have been tested. He said that the two nations have to continue to stand up for democratic values. Lula said that assaults on the two Congress buildings must never happen again. The two leaders said in a joint statement that they will work together to strengthen democratic institutions and continue to reject extremism and violence in politics.
