UN agency calls for resumption of aid deliveries into Gaza amid Israeli blockade NHK

As Israel continues to block the entry of aid supplies into the Gaza Strip, the United Nations Children's Fund, or UNICEF, is calling for the resumption of deliveries, and a lasting ceasefire in the enclave.

The UN agency made the call in a social media post. It said one million children in Gaza are struggling to survive without basic necessities, and that hundreds of thousands lack clean water and sanitation.

Israel imposed a blockade on food and other humanitarian aid deliveries into the enclave on March 2, pressuring Hamas to accept a proposal from the United States.

The US proposed extending the ceasefire in Gaza until around April 20 to allow time to negotiate a framework for a permanent truce. It also called for Hamas to release 11 living hostages.

Meanwhile, Hamas has maintained its stance of seeking an immediate transition to a permanent ceasefire.

An Israeli media outlet reported on Monday that an Israeli negotiating team has returned from Egypt -- a country serving as a mediator for the negotiations between Israel and Hamas. The report said no significant progress was made in the talks.
