The body of a crewmember of a US military Osprey transport aircraft that crashed off the southern Japanese coast has been handed over to the US side. Japan's defense ministry says the Osprey requested an emergency landing at an airport on the island of Yakushima at around 2:35 p.m. on Wednesday, local time. The aircraft disappeared from Japan's Self-Defense Forces' radar screens near the island about five minutes later. Local coast guard officials say many gray pieces of what appeared to be wreckage of the Osprey were found about 3 kilometers from a port on the eastern coast of the island. A man found in almost the same area was later confirmed dead. He was confirmed to be a crewmember of the crashed Osprey. His body was handed over to the US military officials at an airport on the island of Tanegashima shortly after 2 p.m. on Thursday. Japanese defense ministry sources say they have information that the Osprey left the US Marine Corps' Air Station Iwakuni in Yamaguchi Prefecture at around 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday. They say it initially headed for the US Kadena Air Base in Okinawa Prefecture with two other Ospreys. The coast guard officials say the waters around the crash site are about 30 meters deep, and a sonar device is being used in the search. About 10 Japanese fishing vessels also conducted a search between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday and recovered debris. The search and rescue operation for the remaining seven crewmembers will continue overnight.
