Ten people injured in accident on snowy expressway in Niigata Prefecture NHK

A three-vehicle accident on a snowy expressway in central Japan has left about 10 people with minor injuries.

The accident occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday on a stretch of the Kan-Etsu Expressway in Yuzawa Town, Niigata Prefecture.

Police say a large truck collided with a highway bus. Another truck was also involved.

About 10 people with minor injuries were taken to hospitals.

The highway bus, carrying 20 people, was bound from Niigata City to Tokyo.

A heavy snow warning had been issued for the town shortly after 5:00 a.m.

Three centimeters of snow had accumulated over a three-hour period through 9:00 a.m.

The road surface is thought to have been covered with snow at the time of the collision.

The expressway was partially closed to traffic for a time due to the accident.
