Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko says the US Embassy in Tokyo has confirmed that the United States received an official request from Japan on Thursday to ground US Osprey transport aircraft in the country.
Kamikawa was speaking to reporters on Friday, after the US Defense Department said there had been no official request from Japan. A CV-22 Osprey of the US Air Force crashed on Wednesday into the sea off the southwestern prefecture of Kagoshima.
Kamikawa said she will continue to work closely with relevant ministries and agencies, as well as the US side, to appropriately respond to the matter.
Meanwhile, Japan's Defense Minister Kihara Minoru said the US told the ministry on Friday morning that CV-22 Ospreys are currently not operating.
But Kihara expressed concerns that some Ospreys, such as those operated by the US Marine Corps, are still flying. The Marines use MV-22 model Ospreys.
He stressed that the ministry has been repeatedly asking the US to suspend Osprey flights until the aircraft are confirmed safe.
