The Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations has hinted that Palestine may submit a draft resolution to the UN General Assembly as early as next week, calling on Israel to end its occupation of the Palestinian territories within six months. Israel has occupied the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem since the Middle East war in 1967. The International Court of Justice said in its advisory opinion in July that the Israeli occupation is "unlawful." Ambassador Riyad Mansour told NHK on Monday that "the historic advisory opinion of the ICJ" is urging that this illegal occupation should be brought to an end as quickly as possible. He said Palestine has started circulating a draft resolution among UN member states. Mansour added, "We will act on that resolution sometime next week." Unlike a UN Security Council resolution, a UN General Assembly resolution is not binding. Still, Mansour said they are going to demand that Israel end its occupation within six months. He added that they will seek practical steps by Israel to end the occupation, based on the ICJ opinion. Israel's UN Ambassador Danny Danon reacted sharply, calling on the UN General Assembly to "reject this disgraceful resolution outright and instead adopt a resolution condemning Hamas and calling for the immediate release of all hostages."
