The current men's marathon record holder, Kelvin Kiptum, reportedly died alongside his coach in a car crash on Sunday in his home country of Kenya. The 24-year-old broke the world record at the Chicago Marathon in October, clocking in at two hours and 35 seconds. Messages of condolences have been posted on social media. Japan's Takahashi Naoko, the women's marathon gold medalist at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, called the news "unbelievable." She said she was looking forward to Kiptum pushing the boundaries of human potential even further. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said, "We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the devastating loss of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach." He said, "An incredible athlete leaving an incredible legacy, we will miss him dearly."
