Russia's government is hinting at countermeasures in light of Japan's decision to impose additional sanctions on the country. In Tokyo on Friday, the Cabinet approved the new measures that include freezing the assets of another 102 individuals and organizations. The decision came after the G7 leaders agreed at the Hiroshima Summit earlier this month to strengthen sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. Russia is increasing pressure on Japan as it holds the rotating presidency of the G7 this year. Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that Tokyo seems to be determined to assume a leadership role in anti-Russian restrictions. The ministry added that such illegitimate actions will not go unanswered. Russia's Foreign Ministry also took issue with Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Matsuno Hirokazu's comment that Russia's deployment of tactical nuclear weapons to Belarus would escalate tensions. The ministry said Japan is trying to accuse Moscow of nuclear blackmail, and labelled it as nothing more than unscrupulous speculation.
