The United Nations Population Fund, known as UNFPA, has suspended US-funded services in more than 10 countries after the United States paused foreign aid. US President Donald Trump signed an executive order last month on his first day in office to pause foreign aid programs for 90 days to allow for a reevaluation. The order prompted the State Department and its affiliate the US Agency for International Development, or USAID, to suspend foreign aid, with some exemptions, including emergency food assistance. The UN fund said at a news conference in Geneva on Tuesday that maternal care and other health services will be cut off for more than 9 million people in Afghanistan, 1.7 million people in Pakistan and about 600,000 people in Bangladesh. It estimates that without US support, there will be 1,200 maternal deaths in Afghanistan between 2025 and 2028. The UNFPA urged the US to resume aid, saying that "millions of lives were saved," and that, "this was money very well spent by United States taxpayers."
