Rescue work hampered as second cavity emerges in city near Tokyo NHK

A second cavity was confirmed early on Wednesday near a large hole that trapped a truck the day before in Yashio City, Saitama Prefecture, near Tokyo. Fears of a secondary disaster are holding up efforts to rescue a man believed to be the truck's driver.

The truck fell into the cavity that first appeared at an intersection in the city at about 9:40 a.m. on Tuesday. The hole measured about 10 meters in diameter and about 5 meters deep.

The second cavity was found nearby shortly past 1 a.m. on Wednesday, when the cargo bed of the truck was pulled out from the original opening using a large crane.

A utility pole was spotted sinking into the second hole and a sign from a restaurant had fallen down.

Rescue operations continue. Firefighters say they have had no response from the trapped man since Tuesday noon.

Local authorities fear that the ground in the area may cave in further, possibly causing leaks from a gas pipe running underground.

Residents within a radius of about 200 meters are being urged to evacuate.
