Kishida to hold summit talks with leaders of ASEAN, China, S.Korea NHK

Japan's Prime Minister Kishida Fumio is in Indonesia to hold summit talks with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations as well as China and South Korea.

The summit with ASEAN leaders is to be held on Wednesday. This year marks the 50th anniversary of friendship and cooperation between Japan and ASEAN.

Kishida is expected to call for further cooperation in a wide range of areas including infrastructure investment, maritime activities and cybersecurity to maintain and strengthen a free and open international order.

He also plans to explain to the leaders about the safety of treated and diluted water being released from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Later in the day, Kishida is also scheduled to attend a summit between ASEAN, Japan, China and South Korea.

China has been staunchly opposed to the release of the water into the ocean.

Attention is on whether Chinese Premier Li Qiang will make remarks on the matter and whether he and Kishida will speak in person.
