Singer and actor Jane Birkin dies NHK

Singer and actor Jane Birkin died on Sunday at the age of 76.

Birkin was born in London in 1946 and moved to France in the late 1960s.

In 1969, she released a duet with then-lover Serge Gainsbourg, "Je t'aime... moi non plus," attaining global fame.

Birkin was also the inspiration behind the Birkin handbag by French luxury brand Hermes.

French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute by describing her as a "French icon" in a social media message.

Birkin is known in Japan for her efforts to support areas hit by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. She visited Japan for a charity concert just one month after that, and has continued to support the affected areas.

In an interview with NHK in 2021, Birkin said she had kept thinking about people who were forced into unimaginably difficult living conditions by the disaster.

French media report Birkin died at her home in Paris.
