South Korean prosecutors have arrested and indicted a former executive of Samsung Electronics on charges of stealing the firm's secrets to build a complete copy of a Samsung plant in China. The prosecutors say the former executive illegally obtained the firm's confidential information on semiconductor manufacturing technology and process, which the country considers national core technologies. The investigators say the former executive aimed to build a copycat factory in the Chinese city of Xi'an only about 1.5 kilometers from a Samsung plant. The officials also say the defendant recruited more than 200 people from South Korean companies, including Samsung, by offering high salaries. The defendant reportedly instructed them to steal secrets from the companies. South Korean media report that the former executive is believed to be denying the charges. It is estimated that Samsung's damage from the leak is at least 300 billion won, or about 230 million dollars. The prosecutors say the case is a serious crime that shakes the foundation of the domestic semiconductor industry amid intensifying global competition in chip production.
