Suspect in Pelosi attack charged with assault, attempted kidnapping NHK

US prosecutors have brought charges against a man who is accused of bludgeoning US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband after breaking into the couple's home.

The man was arrested on Friday after he allegedly broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and seriously wounded Paul Pelosi by striking him in the head with a hammer.

The Justice Department announced on Monday the man has been charged with assault and attempted kidnapping.

The department quoted the suspect as telling investigators he was going to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage, saying he viewed her as the "leader of the pack" of lies told by the Democratic Party.

The man also said he was going to break her kneecaps.

The department reportedly views the incident as a politically motivated crime.

There has been a surge in threats and other crimes targeting members of Congress. Last year about 10,000 cases were reported -- a ten-fold increase in the five years since 2016.
