Vote counting underway in Indonesia's presidential election NHK

Vote counting is underway in Indonesia's presidential election. More than 200 million people are eligible to cast a ballot.

The winner will succeed incumbent President Joko Widodo.

Indonesia holds a presidential election every five years. Three men are in the running this time.

Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto describes himself as Joko's successor and pledges to continue the president's policies.

Former Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo also says he will maintain Joko's main policies, including the planned relocation of the country's capital.

Former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan is drumming up support from those critical of the current administration. He pledges to partially review the capital relocation plan and correct Indonesia's economic disparities.

The latest poll shows Prabowo well ahead, with a support rate of more than 50 percent. Ballot-counting will begin later in the day. If no one secures a majority of votes, there will be a run-off in June between the top two contenders.
