The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting on Friday following the deadly explosions involving hand-held communication devices in Lebanon. Pagers exploded across Lebanon on Tuesday and portable radio devices detonated in the country the following day. In total, 37 people died and about 3,000 were injured. Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib called the incidents "terrorist aggression" and said Israel violated the basic principles of international humanitarian law. He added that Israel did not distinguish between civilians and military personnel. But the foreign minister also said that Lebanon does not seek revenge and called for a diplomatic solution. Israel's UN Ambassador Danny Danon said, "The real problem is Hezbollah." Referring to the Shia Muslim group based in Lebanon, Danon said to the Lebanese minister, "You have allowed a terrorist organization to create a state within your state." The Israeli envoy also called for the Lebanese government to make Hezbollah retreat from the border the two countries share in accordance with the UN Security Council resolution adopted in 2006. Danon said that if Hezbollah does not retreat to the north of the Litani River, Israel will be left with no choice but to use any means within its rights to defend its citizens.
