Israel and Hamas are reportedly blaming each other for not accepting a ceasefire and hostage release proposal announced by the United States. The US unveiled last month a three-phase plan that includes a 6-week ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas. The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution supporting the proposal, calling on both sides to accept it. Egypt and Qatar, serving as mediators in negotiations, said on social media on Tuesday that they have received a response to the plan from Hamas. Its details have yet to be disclosed. Reuters news agency quoted an Israeli official as saying that Hamas had rejected the proposal for a hostage release. On Wednesday, major Israeli media outlet Haaretz quoted Hamas sources as saying that the group accepted the outline of the proposal and that Israel is the one who does not accept the plan. Saudi Arabian and other Arab media outlets are reporting that maneuvering is underway on the timeline of Israeli forces' withdrawal and areas to be covered, as well as procedures for a hostage release and other issues. Media reports suggest there is a wide gap between Israel, which aims to destroy the Islamic group, and Hamas, which is demanding a permanent ceasefire. Israeli assaults are believed to be underway in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday. Gaza health authorities say 37,164 people have been killed there since the conflict began in October last year.
