A week has passed since Myanmar's military carried out what is believed to be its deadliest airstrike since taking power in a coup two years ago. The pro-democracy National Unity Government says at least 168 people were killed in the northwestern region of Sagaing on April 11. It says six of the victims were age five or younger. Myanmar's military has acknowledged that it carried out the airstrike, which targeted a ceremony to mark the opening of a National Unity Government office. NHK has obtained footage of residents who fled to neighboring villages and remain too scared to return. A 45-year-old woman said she lost two sons, age 20 and 21, and a 13-year-old daughter. The woman said she heard a loud explosion while cooking dishes for an acquaintance's wedding. She said she thought a bomb had struck the place where her children were and ran toward the site. The woman said her 21-year-old son, who couldn't attend university during the pandemic, had been teaching children in the village as a volunteer. She said she wants to take revenge against the military for killing her children. She added that all of her and her husband's dreams have been destroyed and all of their energy and determination is gone. The military airstrike has drawn international criticism, with the United Nations and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations issuing statements condemning it.
