People across India celebrated Diwali, or the festival of lights, on Sunday. Diwali marks the start of the Hindu New Year and is held in October or November. In the capital New Delhi, illuminations lit up shopping streets and houses, creating an air of fantasy. Many people visited temples across the city at sunset, lit candles and prayed for good health and fortune. A New Delhi resident said she prayed for the health of her family and world peace. She expressed hope that the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic group Hamas will end as soon as possible. She said she wants people to get together to work for a world where there will be no more fighting.
