Trump visits wildfire devastated areas in California NHK

US President Donald Trump has visited areas devastated by wildfires in California and pledged all-out efforts to help put out the fires and rebuild the communities.

Twenty-eight people have been confirmed dead in the fires that first started on January 7 in the suburbs of Los Angeles. The blazes have been mostly contained. But a new wildfire ignited on Wednesday.

Trump went to the afflicted areas on Friday to hear from residents and encourage firefighters battling the flames.

Trump has repeatedly criticized California's Democratic governor Gavin Newsom and former President Joe Biden for their response to the fires.

At a meeting with local authorities, Trump said that the disaster took place during the term of "another president." He went on to say that he will be the one to help fix the problem.

Observers say Trump aimed to demonstrate his crisis management capability and empathy by visiting the disaster zone soon after taking office on Monday.
