Prosecutors in Bangladesh are seeking the death penalty for the country's ousted prime minister, Sheikh Hasina. The fugitive former leader stands accused of crimes against humanity in last year's massive uprising that left as many as 1,400 people dead.
The chief prosecutor of the country's war crimes court said Thursday Hasina was the "mastermind and principal architect" behind the violence.
He demanded the "highest punishment" for her -- saying she deserves 1,400 death sentences.
Hasina is reportedly living in exile in New Delhi and has refused to appear before the court.
In Bangladesh, student-led demonstrations over civil service job quotas spread nationwide in July and August 2024. The protests toppled Hasina's 15-year rule and prompted her to flee to India.
Multiple media outlets have reported that in the trial, prosecutors played an audio recording said to feature Hasina's voice ordering security forces to use lethal weapons against protesters.
Bangladesh's interim government has asked India to hand her over, but it's unclear whether the extradition request will be granted.
