China has called on the United States to continue dialogue to manage their differences, following the inauguration of US President Donald Trump. China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told reporters on Tuesday that China hopes the US will meet it halfway to foster stable, healthy and sustainable development of bilateral economic and trade relations. Guo made the comment in response to a question regarding the fact that Trump did not announce additional tariff measures against China on his first day in office. As to the video-sharing platform TikTok, which is owned by a Chinese firm, Trump has proposed establishing a joint venture under which a new US company would hold a 50 percent stake in the firm. He also suggested the possibility of raising tariffs if China does not approve the deal. Guo said China hopes the US will seriously listen to rational voices and provide an open, fair, just and non-discriminatory business environment. He also said business operations and acquisitions should be independently decided by companies based on market principles. Guo also expressed concern about Trump's signing of an executive order to pull the US from the Paris Agreement on tackling global warming. The spokesperson noted that climate change is a challenge faced by all humanity and that no country can remain unaffected by its impact. He went on to say China will work with other countries to tackle the problem. Asked whether China would consider lifting sanctions on new US secretary of state Marco Rubio that reportedly bar him from entering the country, the spokesperson avoided giving a direct answer. He replied instead that China will emphatically protect its national interests. He also said high-ranking officials of both countries must maintain contact in an appropriate manner.
