The sentencing of the former interpreter for Major League Baseball superstar Ohtani Shohei has been postponed for a third time to February 6. US prosecutors charged Mizuhara Ippei with bank fraud and filing a false tax return. They say he stole nearly 17 million dollars from Ohtani's bank account. He admitted to the charges in June 2024. His sentencing was scheduled for January 24 following a second delay. But his lawyer asked the court for a further postponement on Tuesday. The lawyer said in a statement that Mizuhara's forensic psychologist has completed an evaluation of the former interpreter with respect to his gambling, but has not yet been able to finish the report. The lawyer said the psychologist had been preoccupied with other matters over the holiday period, including family health issues. Mizuhara's charges carry a maximum punishment of 33 years in prison, but he is likely to receive a lighter sentence because he has reached a plea deal with prosecutors.
