The new government of the South Pacific nation of Tuvalu has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining relations with Taiwan. The island country of about 11,000 people saw the administration take power this week following January's general election. Prime Minister Feleti Teo's government released a "Statement of Priorities" committing to the long-term and lasting special relationship between Tuvalu and Taiwan. It also says the government intends to strengthen ties. Observers pointed out that the power handover could affect diplomatic relations. Outgoing Prime Minister Kausea Natano long supported ties with Taiwan, but lost his seat in parliament. The finance minister in the previous government had been calling for a review of relations with Taiwan. China is increasing its influence in the region. In January, another island country, Nauru, switched its diplomatic ties from Taiwan to China. Tuvalu is one of three remaining Pacific island nations that continue to have diplomatic links with Taiwan.
