Japan confirms more than 135,000 new COVID cases on Saturday NHK

Japan's health ministry says 14,558 new cases of the coronavirus were confirmed in Tokyo on Saturday.

The number is 1,237 greater than a week ago, marking the fifth consecutive day of week-on-week increases.

The number of seriously ill patients on ventilators or ECMO heart lung machines in the capital was 15, or two fewer than Friday.

Twenty-four infected people died.

The ministry confirmed 135,761 new cases nationwide on Saturday.

Officials say 222 people died from the virus.
