Poland no longer supplying weapons to Ukraine, PM Morawieci says NHK

Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawieci says his country is no longer supplying weapons to Ukraine.

In a speech to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Poland's decision to extend a ban on imports of Ukrainian grain, without mentioning the country by name.

Morawieci said on Wednesday that Zelenskyy's remarks were very unfair.

The prime minister said Poland is no longer providing weapons to Ukraine because it will now defend itself with the most modern weapons.

Poland has been strongly supporting Ukraine, expressing its intention to supply German-made Leopard 2 tanks ahead of other European nations.

Defying European Union policy, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia decided last week to keep a ban on imports of Ukrainian farm products to protect their domestic agriculture.

The Polish government's hardline stance in the trade dispute with Ukraine is believed to be part of the ruling party's campaign strategy for a parliamentary election in October. Farmers are a key part of its support base.

The escalating row between Ukraine and Poland could affect other countries that support Kyiv.
