People in Wajima City have hoisted carp streamers to pray for the recovery of their community, which was heavily damaged in the January 1 earthquake that hit Ishikawa Prefecture's Noto Peninsula in central Japan. Carp streamers are flown to celebrate Children's Day on May 5. A group of people from Wajima City and Kanazawa City met up in Wajima's Asaichi street, the site of a famous morning market that was largely destroyed in a fire caused by the quake. They put up 10 colorful carp streamers that fluttered in the wind. The idea behind the event was to give child evacuees a chance to get together. One of the organizers, Somata Kosaku, said he hoped the decorations would give the children a reason to smile again. The streamers will stay up until around May 10. The community is also planning an event for Children's Day.
