Chinese CDC releases daily COVID figures instead of NHC NHK

The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention has released the latest figures on coronavirus cases and deaths on its website.

China's National Health Commission had announced earlier on Sunday that it would stop publishing daily figures on cases and deaths.

The commission said relevant COVID information would be published for research purposes by the Chinese CDC.

The center says about 3,000 new cases were confirmed on Saturday, and it published the information for the public's understanding and for research. But it appears that the data the center released on Sunday is quite different from the reality.

Hong Kong media say Chinese government documents leaked online estimate that 248 million people, or about 20 percent of the country's population, had been infected between December 1 and 20.

The data that the Chinese CDC said it would stop publishing was released by another official body on the same day. This may indicate confusion within the Chinese government over its COVID measures.
