N.Korea stresses China ties with Xi's reply to its congratulatory message NHK

North Korea touted its ties with China, as the congress of the Chinese Communist Party began on Sunday in Beijing.

The North's ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping had sent a message to leader Kim Jong Un. It was a reply to the congratulatory telegram Kim sent to Xi on China's national founding day on October 1.

In the latest message, Xi reportedly acknowledges that a serious and complicated change has been made in the international and regional situations.

He called for promoting strategic communication between China and North Korea, and boosting unity and cooperation.

The paper also said the Workers' Party sent a congratulatory message to the Chinese Communist Party congress.

Observers say North Korea's aim is to stress its strong ties with China, which continues to defend the North over its repeated missile launches.
