Hurricane Idalia has battered the southern US state of Florida, causing storm surges and floods in many places. Two people have reportedly died in rain-related traffic accidents.
                
US weather authorities say Idalia, now a tropical storm, made landfall on Wednesday on Florida&#039;s Gulf Coast as a Category 3 hurricane with a central atmospheric pressure of 949 hectopascals. That&#039;s the third-strongest level on a five-category scale.
                
Footage released by Reuters news agency shows a major highway flooded with storm surges, and a house in a coastal town collapsing due to swelling waves.
                
The Federal Emergency Management Agency described Idalia as the strongest storm to land in Florida&#039;s Big Bend region in over 100 years. The agency also said more than 1,000 personnel were deployed in response.
                
Reuters says Switzerland&#039;s largest financial group, UBS, expects the storm to result in insured losses of 9.36 billion dollars based on preliminary estimates.
