Hurricane Idalia has battered the southern US state of Florida, causing storm surges and floods in many places. Two people have reportedly died in rain-related traffic accidents. US weather authorities say Idalia, now a tropical storm, made landfall on Wednesday on Florida's Gulf Coast as a Category 3 hurricane with a central atmospheric pressure of 949 hectopascals. That's the third-strongest level on a five-category scale. Footage released by Reuters news agency shows a major highway flooded with storm surges, and a house in a coastal town collapsing due to swelling waves. The Federal Emergency Management Agency described Idalia as the strongest storm to land in Florida's Big Bend region in over 100 years. The agency also said more than 1,000 personnel were deployed in response. Reuters says Switzerland's largest financial group, UBS, expects the storm to result in insured losses of 9.36 billion dollars based on preliminary estimates.
