Takaichi orders ministers to compile basic views on foreign nationals by Jan. NHK

Japan's Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae has ordered her relevant Cabinet ministers to compile basic views on policies related to foreign nationals by January.
The government convened its first ministerial-level meeting on the issue at the Prime Minister's office on Tuesday. The move comes after the Liberal Democratic Party and Japan Innovation Party agreed to address the issue of rule violating foreign nationals when they form a coalition.
Takaichi, Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara Minoru, the Minister in charge of a Society of Well-Ordered and Harmonious Coexistence with Foreign Nationals, Onoda Kimi, and other relevant ministers attended.
Takaichi said amid the declining population and the labor shortage, it's true that there are areas where foreign personnel are needed.
She said, however, it's also true that citizens are feeling unease or injustice over illegal activities or deviations from rules by a subset of foreign nationals. She said the government will firmly address the matter, while drawing a clear line between anti-foreign doctrines.
Takaichi asked the panel to work swiftly on reviewing existing rules and systems for non-nationals and on appropriate acquisition, use and management of land.
