The head of peacekeeping operations at the United Nations has warned of widening divisions around the world and within the UN itself. UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix spoke to NHK on Friday. Lacroix said the crisis in Ukraine has compounded global divisions, including within the UN Security Council. He went on to say that more tensions arise when people lose hope for durable solutions. UN peacekeeping missions are currently underway in 12 regions, including in Africa and the Middle East. More than 86,000 service members and police officers are dispatched from about 120 countries to maintain security and support reconstruction efforts in conflict areas. But officials have become embroiled in fighting or come under attack. Lacroix pointed to the threats posed by armed groups, mines and improvised explosive devices. He also cited fake news and disinformation as a major issue. Lacroix expressed optimism about Japan becoming a non-permanent member of the Security Council next year. He said he believes the country can help to build bridges and emphasize the importance of political unity within the UN and the Security Council.
