A South Korean military aircraft has arrived at a military base near Seoul, carrying 51 Japanese among more than 200 evacuees from Israel. The South Korean military had sent the plane to Tel Aviv to bring home its citizens who wished to escape fighting between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. The plane left an airport in Tel Aviv on Saturday and arrived in South Korea around 11 p.m. the same day, by way of Sri Lanka. The flight was carrying 163 South Koreans. As there were some vacant seats, 51 Japanese and six Singaporeans were able to board the plane. The evacuees disembarked from the plane using landing steps. Some looked happy as they were greeted by their families on the tarmac. The Japanese evacuees were escorted by Japanese Embassy officials in South Korea to fulfill immigration formalities. A Japanese woman in her 30s had been living in Ashdod in southern Israel, a city is relatively close to Gaza. She spoke of her relief upon hearing that she could leave Israel. She recalled hearing explosions until her flight took off. She said evacuees applauded as the plane landed in South Korea. South Korean officials say the proposal for transporting non-South Korean nationals was made to Japan from a humanitarian viewpoint.
