Authorities in Nepal have told NHK that over 100 people were killed and at least 100 injured in a strong earthquake in the northwestern part of the country. The United States Geological Survey says the quake had an estimated magnitude of 5.6 and struck around 11:47 p.m. on Friday local time at a depth of about 18 kilometers. Nepalese authorities estimate a magnitude of 6.4. They say its epicenter was in Jajarkot, a district about 300 kilometers northwest of the capital, Kathmandu. Photos taken at the site show residents with children taking shelter at a hospital in Jajarkot and people sitting in a corridor. There are reports that landslides are hindering rescue operations in the hardest-hit area. Details of the damage are still unknown.
