UK, Germany, US reportedly plan to provide main battle tanks to Ukraine NHK

A US think tank has quoted media reports as saying that Britain is planning to send its Challenger 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine. It also says Germany and the United States have reportedly shown similar intentions and France would not rule out the possibility of sending its Leclerc tanks.

The Institute for the Study of War issued on Tuesday its assessment of the Russian offensive campaign.

It says Western states' provision of main battle tanks will help enable Ukraine to conduct mechanized warfare to defeat the Russian military and liberate Ukrainian territory.

Ukraine's military is believed to be aiming to conduct large-scale counteroffensives soon.

Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi told British media last month that his country needs 300 tanks and 600 to 700 infantry fighting vehicles.

He suggested that the vehicles would make it realistic for Ukraine to retake territory it possessed before Russia's invasion.

Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday that a decision by the German government to provide tanks does not bode well for the future of Russian-German relations and will lead to an unavoidable deterioration of future bilateral relations.
