Blinken criticizes China's actions against Philippines in South China Sea NHK

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has criticized China's actions against the Philippines in the South China Sea for undermining regional peace and stability.

The US State Department said on Wednesday that Blinken held phone talks with Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Enrique Manalo.

The department said Blinken "underscored the United States' ironclad commitments to the Philippines under our Mutual Defense Treaty."

The talks came after Manila said on Monday that its mission to deliver supplies by ship to a military outpost on the Second Thomas Shoal had been disrupted by China Coast Guard vessels. It said a Philippine navy member was severely injured. The Philippines effectively controls the shoal but Beijing claims it.

The Philippine military described the incident as intentional high-speed ramming by the Chinese Coast Guard. It also released new footage on Wednesday.

The video shows China Coast Guard personnel striking a Philippine vessel with what appear to be sticks. Small coast guard boats are also seen ramming into the vessel.

Aerial images show two Chinese ships sandwiching another Philippine vessel from both sides.

Washington has repeatedly called on China to exercise restraint over the waters near the Second Thomas Shoal, but there appear to be no signs of a de-escalation of tensions.
