Brazil's president-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has promised to seek an end to the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest by 2030. Lula delivered a speech on Wednesday at the COP27 UN climate change conference in Egypt. Lula said that the fight against climate change will have the highest priority in his government. He said Brazil will do all it can to achieve zero deforestation and degradation of biomes in the Amazon by 2030. Lula also said Brazil will seek to host the COP30 meeting in 2025, with a venue in the Amazon. The Amazon is the world's largest rainforest, and about two-thirds of it is located in Brazil. Deforestation of the Amazon accelerated under the outgoing Brazilian administration, which pushed for development. Data released by a Brazilian research institute showed that about 13,000 square kilometers of the Amazon was lost from August 2020 to July 2021. The loss of the Amazon rainforest is said to speed up global warming. The world is closely watching how Lula will tackle climate change as the new president of the rainforest nation.
