Indonesia's Joko highlights G20 achievements NHK

The G20 summit wrapped up on the Indonesian island of Bali on Wednesday, where President Joko Widodo stressed the group should function as a source of international coordination to resolve global economic problems.

Joko spoke to NHK on Thursday about his achievements as the meeting's chair. He noted the summit succeeded in adopting a leaders' declaration, which some feared might be difficult.

Leaders discussed food and energy security, but Western nations and Moscow were at odds over whether to attribute related problems to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Joko said, "All of the country hopes that the war in Ukraine can stop, so we can concentrate to recover the world economy."

He highlighted the leaders' creation of a 1.5 billion-dollar fund to be used for future pandemics.

However, countries remained divided on how to deal with Ukraine's situation, and on economic sanctions against Russia.

India will assume the G20 presidency from December and host the next summit. Its government maintains relations with both Western countries and Russia, and must balance its ties with both.
