A high-level meeting between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear program has started in Oman. The Iranian foreign ministry says US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Oman with their delegations and started the talks on Saturday. The US seeks to limit Iran's nuclear program to prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons. Iran maintains that its nuclear program is for peaceful uses, such as power generation, and is demanding the US lift sanctions. Araghchi said, ahead of the meeting, that Tehran's aim is to reach a fair and honorable agreement from an equal position, signaling its stance to the Trump administration, which had been stepping up pressure on Iran. Trump, on the other hand, said on Friday that Iran can't have a nuclear weapon. The White House said the meeting will consist of direct talks. Iran says it will be indirect discussions mediated by Oman. If direct talks take place, they will be the first since the US withdrew from an international nuclear deal under Trump's first administration in 2018. Attention is focused on whether the two countries, which have been at odds, can come to a compromise to find a way to improve relations.
