They Apparently Found Underground Lakes on Mars

They Apparently Found Underground Lakes on Mars
Diana Logan
With all the robots they’ve got tooling around Mars and hovering overhead, it seems like not a month goes by without discovering something new and fascinating about the red planet.

Of course, not every revelation about Mars ends up being true. For decades, people were amazed by the supposed sight of a “face” carved into the Martian surface, but better photography showed that it was nothing more than a mountain and the shadow the mountain cast. Recent Curiosity rover images of a “doorway” in the side of a cliff were similarly misleading, as it was in truth a tiny, seventeen inch fissure in a rock. Similarly, a viral video of a “dark beast” supposedly taken by the Opportunity rover before it broke also caused a meaningless stir.

But this discovery, it seems is real.

In 2018, scientists found evidence of a possible underground lake near the South Pole of Mars. In doing more investigative work in 2020, they found what may in fact be an entire system of underground lakes in the area. Similar lakes in Antarctica, back here on Earth, possess life forms (albeit only bacterial, due to the extreme saltiness of the water).

Mars is not currently capable of having water on the surface due to its thin atmosphere and low pressure. Any surface water would evaporate into space. However, if these underground lakes truly exist, they may be remnants of Mars’s past as a more Earth-like planet.

But we won’t know for sure until we do more research, either with more robots or even a manned mission.
