Japan&#039;s government has provided a water level observation buoy to Taiwan. The device will be used at a barrier lake that overflowed last month in a typhoon, causing deadly floods.
The disaster occurred in Hualien County, eastern Taiwan. Nineteen people died. Five others are still missing.
The barrier lake could overflow again. Japan provided the observation buoy, which is dropped from a helicopter, at Taiwan&#039;s request.
Officials from the two sides took part in a handover ceremony on Friday in Taipei.
Katayama Kazuyuki, chief representative of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association&#039;s Taipei office, said he hopes the device enhances measures against landslides.
Su Jia-Chyuan, chairperson of the Taiwan-Japan Relations Association, thanked Japan for helping at such a difficult time. Su also said that he hopes for further cooperation in the field of disaster prevention.
