Japan's ambassador to the United Nations has urged the Security Council to contribute to peace by investing in people in areas of conflict and elsewhere. Japan hosted an open debate at the council on Thursday on peacebuilding and sustaining peace. Japan holds the council's rotating presidency this month. Envoys from more than 70 countries took part in the debate. Japan's Ambassador to the UN Ishikane Kimihiro said, "We have recently witnessed how easily peace receded and the humanitarian situation deteriorated in some countries and regions, despite strenuous efforts over time." He urged the council to play a leading role in achieving sustainable peace. Ishikane noted that investment in services, including healthcare and education, is essential for sustaining peace. Many of the participants expressed the view that all stakeholders, including women and young people, should become involved in peacebuilding efforts. Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jun called for economic support, saying development is the "ultimate solution" for many developing nations. A Russian deputy representative to the UN said peacebuilding must not be used for interfering in the internal affairs of other countries.
