A senior lawmaker of Japan's main governing Liberal Democratic Party has hinted that he will request the prime minister to re-examine the party's disciplinary decision against him over a fundraising scandal. Former education minister Shionoya Ryu spoke to reporters on Friday, after the party's ethics committee punished him and 38 others on the previous day for failing to report revenues received in kickbacks from fundraising events. Shionoya, who served as the chair of the faction once led by late Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, faces the most severe penalty among the 39. He has been urged to leave the party -- which is the second-heaviest punishment under party rules after expulsion. Shionoya said the committee disciplined him for failing to take appropriate action on illicit accounting practices despite his key position, but he and other faction executives did not conspire on anything or give instructions to members. He also said it's deeply frustrating that he has been disciplined based on a misunderstanding. Shionoya noted that he became the faction leader in August last year, and he was not in a position of overseeing the group during the five years through 2022. The LDP conducted a probe into whether its members failed to report revenues for that period. Shionoya indicated that he will ask Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, who is LDP president, to review his case. When a request for a re-examination is submitted, the General Council will first discuss the matter. If the council decides there are enough reasons for a review, the ethics committee will re-examine the case. Shionoya said Kishida should bear responsibility for the scandal, because he had said the LDP as a whole is responsible for causing public distrust in politics. Former LDP Upper House secretary-general Seko Hiroshige, who has been urged to leave the party alongside Shionoya, submitted a notice of departure on Thursday.
