The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami advisory for wide areas of the country's Pacific coast and smaller islands. It applies to Kochi, Miyazaki and Kagoshima Prefectures in western Japan, and Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo.

The advisory also covers the Izu and Ogasawara island chains in the Pacific Ocean.

A tsunami of up to 60 centimeters was observed on Hachijojima Island at 7:17 a.m. on Monday. Smaller waves were also recorded in other areas.

People in these areas need to stay away from coastlines.
