Japanese weather officials warn temperatures are expected to rise over the weekend after the mercury topped 35 degrees Celsius in many parts of the country on Friday.
The Meteorological Agency forecasts the daytime high will reach 40 degrees in Kumagaya City in Saitama Prefecture, near Tokyo, on Saturday.
The mercury is expected to reach 39 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Maebashi in Gunma Prefecture and Kofu in Yamanashi Prefecture. Daytime highs are forecast to be 38 in Kyoto City and 37 in central Tokyo.
The dangerous heatwave is expected to continue into Sunday in wide regions from Kanto-Koshin to Kinki, with temperatures possibly hitting 39 in Kyoto and Nagoya.
The extremely hot weather is unlikely to end soon. The agency forecasts that daytime highs could reach 35 degrees in some parts of eastern and western Japan until around September 5.
